Heal the heel
1.Why does it happen?
2.What can you do at home?
3.How much time it takes to heal?
4.Does homeopathy have anything to offer?
If you don’t like technicalities skip to the first question directly.
Plantar fascia is the thick sole tissue which begins from the heel and ends at toes.
It is the part of our leg which comes in contact with the ground while walking.
Inflammation i.e. redness, swelling , heat and pain of this tissue is called Plantar fasciitis.
There is tenderness i.e. pain on touch at the site of the heel bone.
So, many refer to it as heel pain. There are other causes of heel pain too, Plantar fasciitis being one of the common cause.
This pain is more in the morning. The first step out of bed is really painful one.
1.Why does it happen?
Plantar fasciitis may be caused due to,
Standing for long hours
Improper footwear
Over stretching of the foot,
An injury.
Obesity i.e. being overweight can lead to it.
Sometimes it may also be caused due to underlying calcaneal spur. Calcaneal spur is a bony outgrowth of the heel bone .The spur irritates the fascia and leads to inflammation. But not always plantar fasciitis is caused by calcaneal spur.
2.What can you do at home?
Use Ice pack wrapped in a cloth at the pain site for 10 -15mins to soothe it .OR use a water bottle with chilled or Ice water to roll your feet on. Repeat 2 to 3 times a day.
Change to footwear with soft inserts like the doctors chappal.
Try to lose some weight.
Expose yourself to some early morning sunshine as Vitamin D replenishment might help you. You can also take Vitamin D supplements.
Do some exercises
Put a towel near your bed, as soon as you wake up, sit straight up and your feet on the towel. Pull the towel with your toes towards you. Repeat 5 times. Then push the folds one by one away from you 5 times.
Sit on a chair , with few small objects like pebbles near your foot and a bowl too. Pick those objects one by one with your toes and put them in the bowl.
Sit on the bed with your painful leg straightened and the other one folded. Use a towel , take its two ends in your hands, place the foot in the U of the towel and stretch it.Hold for 20 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
Stand on a step with your toes on it and the heel in the air. First raise your heels then lower the heel and hold for 5 seconds and again come to previous position. Repeat 10 times.
3.How much time it takes to heal?
Without treatment plantar fasciitis may heal in 6 to 18 months theoretically.
But as I always say each case is different. Some may not be able to bear the excruciating pain.
The daily activities might
get affected.
